Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have treatment on the day of consultation?

In most cases treatment can be carried out at the time of consultation. In general you have been thinking about this for awhile prior to consultation and are keen to proceed. If however you have any reservations we would encourage you to take the time to think this over and follow up at a time when you feel most comfortable. For more complex treatment plans there may not be enough time in that appointment so a follow up appointment will need to be made.

Can I wear make-up before and after my treatment?

It is beneficial to attend your appointment make up free. Removing make up at the appointment stimulates blood flow which can increase the risk of bruising. If you do attend wearing, make-up it will carefully be removed, and the skin is always cleansed with antibacterial liquid prior to treatment. Make up can be applied 24 hours after treatment. As the needle will create small holes in your skin there is an infection risk and for this reason, I would urge you wait before reapplying.

Is there any reasons I may not be able for treatment?

A full medical history is important prior to treatment. The main reason contradinications include Pregnancy, lactation, uncontrolled autoimmune conditions, current infection (antibiotics within the previous 14 days) Neurological disorder, keloid scarring and certain medications which clot the blood.

In general, as this is an elective procedure, we would like you to be at your healthiest prior to treatment.

Is there anything to know before and after treatment?

As with all injectables there is a risk of bruising. This is minimized by the use of super fine needle. A full medical history will be taken prior to treatment to ensure there is no contraindications.

Do not have any other cosmetic or facial treatment 2 weeks prior to treatment unless previously discussed.

Avoid anti-inflammatories for 72 hours prior to treatment.

On the day of treatment, it is best to avoid exercise and come to your appointment make up free if possible.

After treatment: Avoid make up, exercise and alcohol for 24 hours. Facials or massage for 2-3 days and other cosmetic procedures for 2 weeks.

Why is it called wrinkle relaxers and not Botox and why units and not areas?

Botox is a brand of toxin produced by the pharmaceutical company Allergan. They are based in Westport, Co Mayo. As with all prescription items it is against advertising regulations to use the trade name and due to this you will see this procedure describes as wrinkle relaxers or anti- wrinkle treatment. There are many different brands we use at the clinic to ensure that the results are right for you.

Ireland and the UK are one of the few countries to advertise per area. It does not allow for the full facial profile to be balanced and can leave you with less desirable results. You should only be charged for the amount of product you need, and this should be a very tailored approach. .

Do I always need to come back for a top up after my wrinkle relaxer / toxin appointment?

Approximately 98% of cases treated at Rae clinic do not require a 2 week adjustment. We aim to give you the correct dose with the correct placement at your treatment visit. We have found for most cases you will have gained the desired result. If there are any tweaks to the treatment or if you have any concerns, then we would encourage you to book in between week 2 and week 4. It takes 2 weeks for the toxin to settle and be effective. At week 4 the toxin is beginning to wear off and adjustment is not possible as it will not give you the desired results.

I’m not sure what treatment will be best for me?

If in doubt book a consultation. At this appointment I will happily discuss all your options and what you can expect from treatment. Frequently a combination of treatments may be needed depending on age, expectations, and skin type.

How frequently will I need treatment?

This varies between the treatment provided and from person to person. This can be explained further to you at your consultation.

On average anti-wrinkle treatments are carried out every 4-6 months depending on desired results.

Profhilo 3-6 monthly after initial 2-3 treatments
Hyperhidrosis: 3-12 months
Tooth grinding: 4-6 months
Dermal filler: 9-12 months

Am I too old to start treatment?

You are never too old to start on your journey. A combination of treatments may be needed to give you the results you desire, and this may take some time to reach your goal. A consultation is the best place to start.

I have heard you can build up resistance to Botox?

True resistance is thankfully rare. We encourage you to wait a minimum of 12 weeks between treatments and we will only carry out small changes to the initial treatment between week 2 and 4. It is also why aim to treat at one session and not “top up” at week 2. Most cases the toxin is working correctly but expectations have changed. As you age your skin quality reduces so muscle relaxants along do not always give the desired result.
